Shan Dong, Zibo, Zhoucun Ancient City Tour 23-24 February 2013 Just a few hours away from Beijing, is this place called Shandong and within Shandong a small city called Zibo, and within the small city of Zibo, there is an ancient city called Zhoucun Ancient City. We took a tour of this small city and found it to be quite interesting. One thing that struck me the most was the friendliness of the people. This could be because I am a foreigner but perhaps not because I saw the same friendliness towards locals as well. The atmosphere of this ancient city is very welcoming and you feel this sense of wonder as you walk down the streets looking at the buildings and the shops while reading the historical signs. As you listen to the tour guide, you get this sense of feeling that you go back in time for example the old tobacco shop, or the old business that was started in 1775. Another nice thing about this little town is that they have this real cute coffee shop. They have an area where you can play music, or just kick back and relax with a cup of coffee or tea. While taking photos of the people in the buildings, I noticed that there was a group of other people taking photos of us and they turned out to be journalists. A very nice bunch of people. Later, we went to a festival where they were celebrating the ending of Spring Festival. It was very colorful and very crowded on the sidelines so as I was honored to become a journalist for the two days we were there and with that, they gave me a badge (pass), and that got me in to take some really good pictures. I love festivals because they show you the customs of the people and the history of the festivals go back a long way. One of my favorite is the Tiger and the Dragon when they perform their dance and finally meet in battle. The choreography and coordination are simply awe-inspiring. During this time we made it back to the ancient city for an evening walk to see the lanterns and all of the lights that were about the street ways. People seem to enjoy the kicked back, relaxed atmosphere of this part of the town. It's very quiet in the evening so you can get a good night’s sleep when it is time to hit the sack. On another note, the local food is worth mentioning as it is very different from other places I have been and is very delicious. You can sample local food in the area while visiting a small eatery along the path. All-in-all, Zibo is a very nice place to visit and spend a few days or longer exploring the sights and sounds. I hope you enjoy the pictures that accompany this article. If you have any questions, you may contact me at markbjornal@msktphotography.com Until next time, Mark
